MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih: Keys to Ending Poverty

by

The flagship programs of President Prabowo Subianto, including Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and the Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih / Kopdes), are being hailed as the “express lanes” to accelerate poverty eradication. These initiatives not only aim to reduce poverty but also empower people to become economically self-reliant. Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin), Budiman Sudjatmiko, explained that the government’s goal is to empower individuals and communities by providing job opportunities and economic independence. The Sekolah Rakyat program focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty, while MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih create economic benefits for entire communities. MBG’s kitchens and Kopdes’ retail outlets are expected to generate millions of jobs, benefiting various sectors like farmers, SMEs, and village-owned enterprises. Deputy Head of BP Taskin, Nanik S. Deyang, emphasized that these programs offer tangible hope for independence to poor households. Boarding schools provide a conducive environment for children to aspire beyond their limitations, while MBG and Kopdes create value effects for local producers and suppliers. Kopdes Merah Putih plays a crucial role in eliminating costly middlemen from the supply chain, ensuring fair prices for essential goods like LPG cylinders and fertilizers. Additionally, Kopdes provides access to affordable credit, liberating individuals from high-interest lenders and offering capital on favorable terms compared to traditional banks.
