European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a new visa policy that will streamline the process for Indonesian citizens to enter the European Union. This new policy allows Indonesians making their second visit to the EU to be eligible for a multi-entry Schengen visa. The announcement came during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Brussels, emphasizing the significance of strengthening ties between Indonesia and the EU in various aspects such as education, investment, and social exchange.
Von der Leyen highlighted that this visa policy aims to not only facilitate travel but also to foster deeper connections and opportunities for Indonesians in the EU. This move is part of the people-to-people connections pillar in the EU-Indonesia strategic partnership, with a focus on building bridges between the two populations.
President Prabowo expressed his support for strengthening EU-Indonesia relations, particularly in enhancing people mobility. He emphasized the mutual respect and shared values that underpin the partnership, extending beyond economic cooperation to include values, solidarity, and a shared vision for the future.
Both leaders acknowledged the importance of a strong partnership between Europe and Indonesia, with President Prabowo expressing hope for the finalization and signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Brussels. The deepening economic partnership and the new visa policy signal a new chapter in EU-Indonesia relations, characterized by increased openness, strategic cooperation, and mutual benefits for citizens on both sides.
